Clifton Coffee Roasters was founded in Bristol in 2001 by James Fisher, who began by servicing espresso machines for the city's independent businesses. The company grew into wholesale coffee supply, and was notable at the time for pairing that with barista training for customers.
The roastery moved into in-house production in 2013, and now operates from Avonmouth on the outskirts of the city. The business became a certified B Corporation in 2023 and holds SCA Training Centre status, one of a relatively small number of UK roasteries to do so.
Its customer base includes independent speciality coffee shops, Michelin-starred restaurants and five-star hotels across the UK. Several of the multi-site Bristol businesses that joined Clifton as wholesale customers in the early years are still on the books 25 years later.
The roastery sources through direct trade relationships across Brazil, Honduras, Colombia, Burundi and China.
