Dark Woods Coffee was founded in 2014 in West Yorkshire by three people with long histories in the coffee industry. Damian, the roaster and coffee buyer, had spent years judging at Cup of Excellence and Best of Panama competitions and built relationships with producers that gave Dark Woods access to sought-after micro-lots.
Paul co-founded Coffee Community in 1999, one of the UK's early coffee education and consultancy businesses, and co-wrote the City & Guilds barista qualification. The roastery is housed in a converted Victorian textile mill at the foot of the West Yorkshire Pennines.
Dark Woods is a certified B Corp with a score described as industry-leading, and has accumulated over 100 Great Taste Awards. The roastery articulates a position it calls Beyond Specialty, which acknowledges the limits of the SCA scoring system and argues for higher prices and greater transparency at farm level than the certification currently requires.
The range covers blends and single origins, with training available and a barrel-aged coffee in the permanent range.
