Origin Coffee was founded in 2004 by Tom Sobey in Cornwall, making it one of the UK's longest-running specialty roasters. The business has expanded to seven coffee shops across Bristol, Porthleven, three London locations (Shoreditch, British Library, Southwark) and Edinburgh, with the roastery remaining in Porthleven.

Origin holds B Corp certification and has built a direct trade sourcing programme developed over two decades of producer relationships. The roastery employs Q Graders and coffee professionals throughout its production and training operation, and runs a formal coffee education programme.

Tom Sobey has remained at the helm throughout, and the business describes its approach as a triple-bottom-line model: quality, people and sustainability weighted equally. They sell subscriptions, equipment and wholesale nationally, with over 10,000 reviews on their retail products.
