Tank Coffee is a Greater Manchester roastery with a specific focus on Central and East African origins, particularly Ethiopia, Kenya, Burundi, and Uganda. The business grew out of involvement with the Greenbelt Festival, where the team runs a large Fairtrade coffee bar at Cheltenham Racecourse each August Bank Holiday.
Proceeds from that bar go back into the festival. A documentary called Black Gold prompted the founders to investigate supply chains directly, which led to trips to Ethiopia and Kenya to meet farmers before the roastery was established.
The roastery has been operating since at least 2009, when a roaster was imported from Turkey. Tank sells through a subscription service as well as one-off online orders, and long-term customers appear to be loyal over many years based on their customer reviews.
