Volcano Coffee Works was founded in West Dulwich by New Zealand-born chef Kurt Stewart, who started by serving espresso from a vintage Italian Piaggio Ape cart on Rosendale Road. The business has grown into a south London roastery with a small team, and Kurt still roasts the first batch of each day.
Volcano was one of the first UK coffee companies to achieve B Corp status and now sits in the top 30% of B Corps worldwide. The team roasts on Loring machines, which the company says use around 80 per cent less gas than conventional drum roasters.
Kurt's chef background shapes how Volcano approaches flavour development, treating blending more like building a dish than picking an origin. The Mount Blend has earned three stars at the Great Taste Awards, with five Great Taste wins overall.
All packaging is recyclable, half of it made from recycled material, and the Nespresso-compatible pods are fully compostable.
